Did you know that July is National Picnic Month? No?! Me neither! I just discovered that fact while I was scrolling through Twitter. Now that restrictions are finally being eased, picnics are finally allowed and hey, who doesn’t love a picnic? Having tasty food such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, crisps, cakes, etc, what’s not to love? Well all the tasty things could mean you’ve just demolished 68531 calories in one afternoon! Since it can be hard to find picnic food when you are trying to lose weight, hopefully these Slimming World picnic ideas will help you keep on track. Also don’t forget to bring along your Summer picnic essentials too!
If you have time to prepare for the picnic you can make everything or at least part of the food that you can bring with you. Here are a few ideas for you:
This summer vegetable crustless quiche is made with roasted veg, eggs and cottage cheese. As it’s crustless it’s gluten free and not laden with loads of fat.
Pasta salads are good to bring on picnics as they are really filling. Make sure they stored are in airtight containers so they don’t leak all over your picnic basket. To make the BLT Pasta Salad; boil some pasta, grill bacon with the fat removed, chop up some tomatoes and lettuce. Once the bacon has cooled, cut into small pieces. Mix some light mayo with the cooled pasta, chopped tomatoes and lettuce and add the bacon through it. You could even chuck in some cooked chicken, sweetcorn and spring onions too!
Using your Hex B allowance your sandwich or wrap can be low syn or even no syn depending on what filling you choose. Although try not to make it up too far in advance so it doesn’t get too soggy!
Boil some eggs for 10 minutes and cool down quickly in cold water and you have yourself a protein packed snack that has zero syns.
Scotch Eggs are a necessity for picnics but they are quite high in syns. However you can make some of your own. Slimming World have their own recipe for Picnic Scotch Eggs. Don’t worry if you are vegetarian, you won’t miss out as Pinch of Nom have a recipe for vegetarian scotch eggs using veggie sausages.
Remove the skin from the chicken and spray them with some a Frylight. Then you can flavour them how you like before shoving them in the oven. You could sprinkle them with Cajun Seasoning, put them in with some garlic, lemon and herbs, Chinese 5 Spice or even just plain with some salt.
You can make your own Tzatziki using 0% Fat Greek Yoghurt, a squeeze of lemon juice, a garlic clove, cucumber and some fresh dill. Cut up some carrot, cucumber and pepper sticks to dip in to them.
Chop up some strawberries, kiwis, pineapple, apples, etc for a tasty summer dessert. You could even stick them on a bamboo skewers and drizzle with some Sweet Freedom Chocolate Sauce for added flavour.
If you’ve decided to have an impromptu picnic or you just can’t be arsed making anything yourself then there’s plenty of things you can pick up at the supermarket.
Pick up packs of roast chicken, ham, roast beef, cooked prawns, etc from the chilled aisle. Most of these are zero syns.
These are good for crunching on after dipping them into a homemade dip or you can go for low fat shop bought dips but remember to work out your syns.
You can pick up boxes with fruit already chopped up ready to eat or you can just buy fruit such as bananas, oranges, etc that already come in their own packaging.
Olives seem to fall into the love ‘em or hate ‘em category. Personally I love them and at only 1 syn per 8 olives they are a good snack to have.
Most supermarkets have bowls of pre-made salad in their fruit and veg aisle. There’s no faffing about having to wash and chop the veg, it’s already done for you! It’s the perfect side dish to cold meat or seafood and will give you your speed food.
Pick up some Babybel Light, 3 of these are one of your HexA so as long as you’ve not had your allowance for the day you will stay within your syns.
