9 Things To Do In The Winter Evenings

10/02/2021

Life can feel a little bleak during January.  Christmas is over and all the twinkling lights and decorations are now down. Outside it is cold, dark and gloomy for a good few weeks yet before Spring arrives.  So what can we do to pass the time until the evenings start getting a bit lighter?  Here’s a list of 9 things to do in the winter evenings that will help make those long dark nights pass that little bit quicker.

9 Things To Do In The Winter Evenings

Learn a new recipe

There are plenty of recipes out there waiting for you to try.  Maybe you received a cook book for Christmas. Or found a tasty sounding dish online that you wanted to make.  How about attempting a family recipe?   Once you have found what you are going to cook grab yourself a glass of wine and get chopping.  Do this part before you start drinking the wine, no one wants to find bits of fingers and nails in their food!!

Read

Cold winter nights are ideal for reading a book, magazines or catching up with your favourite blogs. Get yourself a hot chocolate or cup of tea, a blanket and snuggle under to read and you have the perfect cosy night in.  Bonus points if you have a real fire to sit in front of and read!

Have a pamper evening

Run yourself a bath, light some candles, slap on a face mask and relax in the bath. Put on some chilled music to help you unwind after a long day.  Smother your body in body lotion, don’t want your skin to be as flaky as the sausage rolls you consumed over Christmas.  Put on your comfy PJs and either go to bed and read a book or stay up and watch a feel good movie.

Have a Themed Night

Eat your way around the world by either making or buying your favourite dishes and have a themed night.  I’ve been meaning to do this for ages but with a fussy 4 year old in the house I feel my efforts won’t really be appreciated unless it is served with chips!

Get Fit

Everyone is motivated at the start of the year to get fit whether it’s joining a gym, swimming or Pilates.  Membership costs to some gyms can be quite expensive but there are ways to get fit without spending much money.  You could wrap up warm and go for a walk outside, a run if it’s not too slippy or watch some fitness videos on YouTube.  I’ve been exercising to Zumba Sulu on YouTube and then following that with a 10 minute toning with weights video.

Organise your wardrobe

If you are anything like me and have bought some new clothes and accessories in the post Christmas sales and are now having to ram them into your already bulging wardrobe.  Then why not organise your wardrobe?  There’s probably things in there that you might not wear again or even forgotten about.  Have a clear out and if there are things that are in a good condition to sell you could also make some money!

Kitchen Disco

I bought these disco lights from Amazon (£15.99) for me Noah so we can have our own disco in our kitchen.  These are sound activated and the lights change the colours and speed to the music.  Add in a cocktail or two (or 6) and you can have your ‘night out’ at home.

Cinema Night

Those nights where it is too cold to go out and you really can’t be arsed moving off your sofa, why not have a cinema night at home?  Grab a selection of snacks such as popcorn, pick n mix, ice cream, etc and snuggle down to watch a film.   There are plenty of films on Netflix to pick or maybe you still have a huge dvd collection to choose an old favourite from.

Update your blog

Now obviously this is only going to apply to those who already have a blog but if you don’t have one then why not start up your own one.  There are plenty of articles out there on t’internet to help you start off.  Are there any posts that need updating?  Maybe you have written up some posts that you could link into your older ones?  Got dodgy, grainy pics that look like a 5 year old took them (putting my hand up here) when you first started blogging?  Take some new photos and replace the older pics with these much prettier ones instead.  Check for broken or dead links in your blog and remove them as it can affect SEO and page ranking.
