Footdee Fishing Village | Aberdeen

Footdee Aberdeen

Last week I met up with Iga and Steff (2 of my Aberdeen bloggers friends) for lunch down at the beach.  It was the first time that I had seen them since Christmas so we had plenty to catch up on.  Although Iga had to leave shortly after as she was working, Steff and I headed down to Footdee which is just a very short distance from Aberdeen Beach.  Typically of Scottish weather the previous day had been a warm and sunny one, today however was cold and grey.  Although the sun did attempt to make an appearance a few times during our walk around.  Btw this post is very pic heavy, just thought I’d warn you ?.

Footdee Fishing Village

Footdee (or as us locals like to call it, Fittie) is a small fishing village that was built at the start of the 19th century.  It was designed by the local architect, John Smith to rehouse Aberdeen’s fishing community that were living in condemned properties.   Standing in the Squares you will notice that all the houses were built with the windows and doors facing inwards.  This was to shelter from the freezing North Sea wind, as in the middle of winter I’m guessing the wind chill factor there would feel like -80°C, i.e. very cold!  You will also see outbuildings opposite each home.  When they were built years ago they were made from driftwood and were used to house the fishermen’s nets and such like but most of them have now been rebuilt with stone. Some of these outbuildings are shall we say, uniquely decorated. Visiting Footdee is just like stepping back in time.  The cute little cottages have Hobbit sized doors and was given Conservation Area status in 1968.

If you walk through the Squares you will end up at the harbour where you will find the war memorial, the Roundhouse which used to be the control centre for harbour navigation, the Silver Darling restaurant and if you are lucky you might get to see some dolphins.  The Marine Operations Centre is a huge building and looks a bit out of place down there with its modern architecture.  It took over from the Roundhouse when it opened in 2006 and is responsible for over 8000 shipping arrivals every year.  The NorthLink ferry passes through the harbour if a visit to Orkney and Shetland floats your boat (sorry!)

We came across a few residents on our walk around Footdee and they were all very friendly and said “Hello”.  Except the one below who ran past me without making eye contact and didn’t stop for a head pat or tummy tickle. Do they not know I’m a crazy cat lady?!  I guess people that live here must be used to random people walking around the village taking photos!

If you are ever in Aberdeen this is one place that should be on your must-see list.   But remember and pack your thermals as you may need them depending on what time of year you visit.
